The Art of Movement
The art of movement is a healing art. To dance is to feel fully alive and engaged in one’s own body. To breathe, ground and move mindfully is to allow the bodymind to reveal the riches secluded in the deep crevasses of our experience. Creativity is unleashed when we allow ourselves to be present to the body’s memories and emerging images.
Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) is one of the 6 creative arts therapies - Dance/Movement (DMT), Drama (DT), Music (MT), Art (AT), Poetry, Play – that engages the physical and cognitive self to enable integration of thought and feeling. In recent years DMT has embraced the wider fields of somatics and neuroscience and deepened its understanding of the intrinsic physiological relationship between body and mind. A DMT will recognise the unique qualities of each client and explore their innate expressiveness of what it feels like to be them. A DMTherapist will listen, observe, be curious, reflect, explore, and find creative ways to develop meaning and understanding of what is being shared in the present moment.
Who makes TAOMI?
TAOMI brings together a group of practitioners with a wide range of experience in psychotherapeutic practice, teaching and research in dance movement therapy, authentic movement, expressive arts, and somatic movement education. Our practitioners enjoy sharing their knowledge and experience with a vibrancy that encourages engagement at all levels – physical, intellectual, and creative. TAOMI invites people from all levels of experience and expertise to join webinars, workshops and courses.
TAOMI is building a community of creative movers and therapists; people who are seeking entry into the healing art of movement, movers who are already immersed in the healing pathway but seek connection, integration and much more. TAOMI is a new home where you can find solace and play a part in the creation of a creative and intentional community. TAOMI will hold a virtual and physical space where compassion, creativity, movement and authentic expression is the currency.
Learning with TAOMI
TAOMI is committed to an experiential learning model where theory is embedded in the practice. More than this the educators explore delivery through with a narrative approach where the imagination is integrated with the learning process. We all have stories to share, and enlivening the rich imagination of our mindbody within the context of theory and practice makes the leaning all the more real and relevant.
TAOMI offers a 2021 programme that includes webinars with leading practitioners and researchers in the dance movement therapy field. There are opportunities to meet in small groups to move together – either as a curious newcomer to the field, or a therapist seeking support and nurture. We plan to build a library of recorded sessions where anyone can hook in when they have a moment and seek some guided movement meditation. TAOMI will also offer one-to-one therapy sessions, and run a monthly supervision group for therapists.
In 2022 TAOMI will launch their educational programme that will offer an in-depth learning platform in the art and science of dance movement therapy. Details will be published in Spring 2021 and applications invited from September 2021.
